Saved By The Bell: Where Are They Now?

Saved By The Bell
For years we watched them deal with every challenge life could throw at them. Drunk driving, homelessness, divorce, drugs, bullies, even death. The good news was, by the end of each episode they were Saved by the Bell. It was, after all, just a fun high school sitcom, spawned from the ashes of the promising but less successful Good Morning, Miss Bliss. At its height, from 1989 to 1993, Saved by the Bell was one of the biggest shows on the telly, in the States, the UK, Ireland, and pretty much everywhere else in the world as well. But that was then, and this is now. Now all in their mid-thirties, some have survived, even thrived, while others have withered and faded away. Then there's THAT porn scandal. Blockbuster's Marshall Julius investigates the here and now of the original cast of Saved by the Bell.

Zachary 'Zack' Morris

Zachary 'Zack' Morris
Name Mark-Paul Gosselaar
Quote: "There are so many rumours about me. Like, there's a rumour that I'm dead or I'm dying or whatever, these great rumours that I'm a drug addict, that I'm gay, that I'm this. It doesn't bother me. Whatever they say, it's fine by me. It doesn't affect my personal life."
Life and Times: Born to a Dutch father and Indonesian mother, Mark-Paul was once telly's top teen idol as the cool but troublesome Zach, as irresistible to his co-stars as he was to his adoring fans. Besides dating Saved by the Bell's Lark Voorhies for three years, Mark-Paul met his future wife and the mother of his two children, Lisa Ann Russell, on the set of short-lived spin-off Saved by the Bell: The College Years. Professionally speaking he's done just as well for himself, successfully jumping from teen to adult stardom, most notably as tough detective John Clark in Steven Bochco's critically acclaimed and wildly popular TV drama NYPD Blue.

Albert Clifford 'A.C.' Slater

Albert Clifford 'A.C.' Slater
Name: Mario López
Quote: "I love talking about women because they are a constant study and you're always learning."
Life and Times: An athlete, dancer and occasional drummer who hit the big time as kind-hearted jock A.C., Mexican actor López kept his post-Bell career going by diversifying. A talented presenter with shows like Name Your Adventure, The Other Half and Pet Star to his credit, Mario kept the acting thing going with a 50-episode gig on top daytime soap The Bold and the Beautiful in 2006, starred in the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line in 2008, and the very same year, released a book, Mario López's Knockout Fitness.

Samuel 'Screech' Powers

Samuel 'Screech' Powers
Name: Dustin Diamond
Quote: "Screech and I have a lot in common. We are both strange, funny, interested in computers, good at chess, and chick magnets."
Life and Times: A left-handed dork with a black belt in karate, Diamond is perhaps the greatest washed up celebrity of his generation, forever linked with role of über-dork Screech, possibly because he played him for well over a decade, in series forerunner Good Morning, Miss Bliss (1987-1989), Saved by Bell (1989-93) and additional spin-offs The College Years (1993-94), Wedding in Las Vegas (1994) and The New Class (1994-2000). Diamond is, in fact, the only actor to appear in every Saved by the Bell episode, spin-off and movie. Ranked number six in VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Kid Stars, Dustin was also named, by readers of Stuff magazine, as the third most annoying former child actor that they would most like to punch in the face. Particularly annoying was a filthy three-in-a-bed homemade "celebrity" porno tape that hit the net in 2006, featuring Diamond and two obscenely willing young ladies. The saddest part is that Diamond, desperate for any kind of attention, is rumoured to have leaked the tape himself. These days he's a stand-up comic, or at least that's what he's calling himself, and of course he's still totally trading on his tragic Screech persona: "A lot of people do stand-up comedy in hopes of landing a television series. Well, I'm just the opposite. I've already had a TV series and now I'm doing stand-up. If this doesn't work, soon I'll be doing security with Gary Coleman." If it's funny, that's because it's true.

Lisa Turtle

Lisa Turtle
Name: Lark Voorhies
Quote: "My mother saw a movie when she was 14 years old. I forget the name of the movie, but one of the lead characters was named Lark. She decided then she would name me and she stuck to it, and here I am."
Life and Times: As gossipy fashion lover Lisa on Saved by the Bell, Lark was once on top of the world with a hit show and a hunky boyfriend, dreamy co-star Mark-Paul. Sadly when the show ended, so did the relationship, and that was pretty much it for Voorhies. Formerly engaged to Martin Lawrence, she found out the relationship was over when the Big Momma's House funnyman mentioned his relationship with another woman on Arsenio Hall's chat show. Today she's on her second marriage, with one kid from current husband Andy Prince. Professionally, though Lark continues to do a bit of telly from time to time, it's never on anything successful or memorable.

Jessica 'Jessie' Myrtle Spano

Jessica 'Jessie' Myrtle Spano
Name: Elizabeth Berkeley
Quote: "Ever since those reviews for Showgirls, it's like I was that woman in The Scarlet Letter. Except that instead of having to wear the letter A for adulteress, I was condemned to wear an S for showgirl."
Life and Times: A hot vegetarian who made her name as sexy straight-A student Jessie in Saved by the Bell, Berkeley almost ruined her adult career by stripping off and making a total fool of herself in Paul Verhoeven's epic turkey Showgirls (1995). Taking time out to get a degree in English Literature from UCLA, Liz later signed with the United Talent Agency and started again, taking small but memorable roles in movies like The First Wives Club (1996) and, in 1999, Any Given Sunday, appearing on stage in London in a production of Lenny later that same year. Impressing the critics with performances in indie movies Rodger Dodger (2002) and Moving Malcolm (2003), Berkeley made her Broadway debut in 2004, shortly after her marriage to New York artist Greg Lauren. Most recently seen in recurring roles in hit shows CSI: Miami and The L Word, comeback queen Berkeley has a plum role in Donnie Darko sequel S. Darko, coming soon to a cinema near you.

Kelly Kapowski

Kelly Kapowski
Name: Tiffani-Amber Thiessen
Quote: "I was never clean, prissy and perfect like Kelly. Kelly was the cheerleader and the perfect girl next door, and being that I grew up in the business, I never went to school. I was never a cheerleader. I never went to the prom. I didn't have any of those experiences."
Life and Times: A former Miss Junior America beauty pageant winner, Thiessen is much more than just another has-been star of Saved by the Bell - she's the has-been star of Beverly Hills, 90210. As teen dream Kelly on Saved by the Bell, Tiffani-Amber inhabited the dreams of a generation of adoring boys, before scaring them all off as the bitchy, conniving Valerie when she joined the cast of Aaron Spelling's 90210 in 1994. Best friends with her 90210 co-star Jennie Garth and married to actor Brady Smith since 2005, Thiessen scored a Woody Allen film, Hollywood Ending, in 2002, but since then has appeared in swiftly-cancelled shows like action drama Fastlane (2002-2003), sitcom Good Morning, Miami (2003-2004) and comedy drama What About Brian (2007).

Mr Richard Belding

Mr Richard Belding
Name: Dennis Haskins
Quote: "The good thing is people know me as Mr. Belding. The bad thing is people know me as Mr. Belding. It's tough to make people believe you can be someone besides Mr. Belding. But, because of my role as Mr. Belding, I have been put in a position to make many things possible, and that's what counts."
Life and Times: A former music manager, agent and concert promoter whose clients included the great Tom Jones, actor Dennis Haskins worked his way up to Saved by the Bell via supporting guest roles in shows like CHiPs, The Dukes of Hazzard and Magnum P.I. As the long-suffering but kindly headmaster of Bayside High, Haskins stuck with the Saved by the Bell series throughout its many incarnations, but from 2000 slipped back into irregular guest roles on largely lesser known shows and movies. Almost 60 now, with a 'tache, a gut and a hastily receding hairline, Haskins wisely focuses less on his acting career than he does on his charity work.
